Active Program Profiles

The LifeBridge toolkit couldn't have been compiled without the expertise and input of about a dozen programs that were operational by mid-2018. Since then, another dozen or more programs have started up and continued to innovate. In fact, there are some exciting new ways medical societies, mostly at the county level, but also at the state and specialty level are promoting physician well-being. Here are some that have agreed to be listed as resources.

Which members are eligible for services?
Physicians, Medical Residents, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and Retired Members of the Association.
Appointments allowed per member: 8 per 12 month period
Current therapist hourly billing rate: $125
No-show billing allowed? Yes

Member financial responsibility: No
Do you offer telehealth appointments? Yes
Do you survey program participants for satisfaction? Attempt
Demographics collection: Age, Gender, Specialty, Employment Status, Medical Provider Type, Challenges Faced, Appointment Urgency and Telemedicine Provided.
Are there any variants or features to your counseling program worth mentioning? In 2020, we added a Resident Meet and Greet (30 minutes no paperwork) appointments this year to facilitate introduction to the program. We arrange the appointment with scheduling help from the residency program and email introducing resident to counselor who follows-up directly. They can cancel if they want.
We also expanded to non-members locally and al state medical association members to access our program due to COVID this spring.

What is the biggest success of your program? We are experiencing a huge surge of appointments in 2020 due to the addition of telehealth. By mid year, we already met our budget for appointments for the year.
What surprises did you have as a result of establishing the program? ACMS developed its program during 2016 with a working group of physicians and behavioral health experts. Since then, it has become one of the key bread and butter benefits of our medical society and what we are now most known for. While it was satisfying to start the program, what I didn't anticipate was the working group's synergy that continued into some other collaborative projects and deep relationships to this day. Out of those relationships, two competing hospitals formed similar peer-to-peer programs for their medical staffs, a coalition to promote physician well-being was born, ongoing training and communications were stablished across institutions, and a general sense of momentum has be maintained for 5 years.
Physician Quotes
: "I just wanted to send you a quick note to say thank you for making physician wellness a propriety. Specifically, thank you for advocating for the physician vitality program. I have utilized this program in the past but life is busy and there are plenty of excuses for not making mental health a priority."
What is the best advice you can give to somebody thinking of starting a program?
You need a physician advocate to help you promote the program initially. You DEFINITELY need to have physicians vet your counselors/therapists. We have had some unqualified therapists apply who would not have communicated program excellence. Make all decisions around confidentiality first and foremost when marketing program.

What demographics do you collect from your therapists on members? Age, Gender, Specialty, Employment Status (e.g. system employed/independent), Challenges faced (e.g. depression, marital, etc.) and Referrals Made.
Do You Survey Program Participants for Satisfaction? Yes

What is the biggest success of your program? Since CCMS started our wellness program in 2017, we have seen utilization nearly double each year, while acceptance and appreciation of the program is also noticeably increasing. As word continues to spread, more and more physicians will be comfortable using the program and obtain the help they desire. We know from the survey responses how deeply important this program has been to many of the participants, but truly if we helped only one physician, it is worth it.
Do you have any participant quotes we can share publicly? "[The CCMS program psychologist] has made a lasting impact on my improved ability to practice medicine without unnecessary stress which I used to place on myself."
"[The CCMS program psychologist] has been an incredible asset to my mental health. He is very caring, extremely knowledgeable, and knows how to clearly explain his solutions to all types of life's problems. The service is great. The high quality of therapist that I have found through this resource has been an invaluable tool to finding mental clarity."
"The sessions made me realize how important it is to seek help.”
“It brought me out of an abyss.”
“This is a great benefit for local physicians - I would highly recommend & will suggest to others.”
What's the best advice you can give to somebody thinking of starting a program? My advice is, don't wait for a financial windfall to support your program before launching, as the money will most likely come after the program has time to gain traction. At CCMS we were not able to raise additional funds for the program at the start, and decided that it was more important to get the counseling sessions up and running without waiting for financial backers. By the time we were in need of additional funding to keep up with increased utilization, we were able to more easily demonstrate the necessity of the program and the benefits of ensuring its future. Now, financial supporters are providing us the funds we need.
Anything we forgot? A useful tool in helping to ease the stigma of seeking counseling/coaching services and increase support word-of-mouth is to introduce the idea of a "New Year Mental Wellness Check-Up". The CCMS Physician Wellness program launched this campaign in January 2020 and saw our largest month of utilization to date. It is possible some of those physicians became more open to the idea of counseling after their "check-up" with the psychologist and were able to address issues before they became worse. Additionally, there are now more physicians having comfortable interactions with our wellness program, and can help share that news with their colleagues.

What is the biggest success of your program? This was a well thought out program with a Psychiatrist  as the chair. He personally recommended the majority of our participating therapist and we've added a few on along the way. We spent several months working with the Call Center, creating a brochure before promoting the program.
What surprises did you have as a result of establishing the program? Surprised it hasn't been more utilized despite robust promotion and the fact we've had no calls or visits in 2020 with the pandemic.
What's the best advice you can give to somebody thinking of starting a program? Make sure to have a strong knowledgeable  committee leading the way and go slow and steady. This needs to be well thought out months in advance of rolling out.

In addition to your program, what other member wellness activities do you provide: Counseling Session, Coaching Session, CME Style Training, Online Resources and Links, Wellness articles in newsletter/online, Systems Change Advocacy, Discount on meal delivery services, concierge services and private yoga therapy and meditation.
What is the biggest success of your program? The program growth we've experienced in terms of adding additional resources and services has been our biggest success. We started with therapy and coaching, but have expanded based on member feedback to include discounted meal delivery, concierge services, yoga therapy and meditation and educational wellness events.
What surprises did you have as a result of establishing the program?
The response to our wellness events has been outstanding. We've brought in professional speakers from all over the country to present on a variety of topics including Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Interpersonal Communication, Moving from Burnout to Professional Fulfillment and more. The response from members has been very positive.
What is a horror story or mistake you made in establishing the program? Marketing the program effectively has been an ongoing struggle. Usage of therapy and coaching has been relatively low, though we are anticipating this will change as a result of our new NCHF grant. Not having the ability to pay for member appointments in full at the start of the program likely deterred members from utilizing the therapy services. Stigma associated with seeking assistance is also still a challenge in our region.
What's the best advice you can give to somebody thinking of starting a program?
Connect with other medical societies who have successful wellness programs before launching your own. Other societies have provided WCMS with a wealth of valuable knowledge. Collect as much regional data as possible about what services your members would most highly value and work to eliminate barriers (stigma, financial challenges, etc.) before rolling out the program.

What's the best advice you can give to somebody thinking of starting a program? Before starting the program do not just have board support for it.  Board support is nothing without a few good physicians who commit to advocating and working for the program

What is the biggest success of your program? Physicians have been very open to the program and they have been surprisingly transparent when they call me to discuss the program.  A number of doctors have called to inquire about the program and say that while they aren't quite ready for counseling, it means a lot that this is a readily available resource. We have also had strong attendance in the programming we have done.
What surprises did you have as a result of establishing the program? Program directors at our residency program have been very grateful for the program and have promoted it widely among the residents.
What's the best advice you can give to somebody thinking of starting a program? Try to engage leadership from all area hospital systems to get support and buy-in from the program. If you have a committee creating the program, offer them wellness activities and resources to deepen their understanding of the value of this resource.
